Hi everyone, Nikki Grassmann here from Crowned Cabinets in Dunedin! When you start
looking at kitchen displays or browsing through design portfolios, it is very easy to get
swept away by the surface beauty. The paint colors, the wood grains, and the sparkling
hardware are what capture our attention. But as a cabinet designer, I always tell my
clients in Pinellas County that a kitchen is only as good as what is inside the walls of the
cabinets. Cabinetry is essentially the heavy-use furniture of your kitchen, and it has to
hold up hundreds of pounds of stone countertops while being opened and closed
thousands of times a year. To make a smart investment, you need to look past the doors
and understand the raw materials that make up the “skeleton” of your kitchen.
The most common material debate centers around the cabinet box itself, and the gold
standard for high-end cabinetry is all-plywood construction. Plywood is made by
gluing together multiple thin layers of wood veneer with the grain running in alternating
directions. This cross-grain pattern makes plywood incredibly stable and structurally
strong. It holds screws tight, resists sagging under the weight of heavy granite or quartz,
and handles shifting beautifully. For our Florida homes, plywood is particularly crucial
because it has a high resistance to moisture. If you experience a minor under-sink
plumbing leak or high humidity during our muggy summers, a plywood box will hold its
shape where other materials will completely fail.
The main alternative to plywood is Particle Board or Furniture Board, which is often
found in builder-grade or lower-tier stock cabinetry. Particle board is made by mixing
wood chips and sawdust with resin and pressing it into sheets. While it provides a
perfectly flat surface for laminates, it lacks the structural integrity of plywood. It is
significantly heavier, which strains the wall anchors over time, and it acts like a sponge
when exposed to water. If moisture gets past the outer laminate layer of a particle board
cabinet, the wood particles swell, crumble, and split apart. Once a particle board box
swells, it cannot be repaired, and the structural integrity of that cabinet is gone forever.
Another material that plays a vital role in modern cabinetry—especially for painted
doors—is MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) or its denser cousin, HDF (High-
Density Fiberboard). Now, don’t confuse these engineered woods with cheap particle
board. MDF and HDF are made from fine wood fibers combined with wax and resin,
creating an incredibly dense, smooth panel. While I always prefer plywood for the
cabinet boxes, HDF is actually the superior material for the center panels of painted
Shaker doors. Because natural solid wood naturally expands and contracts with
changes in humidity, a solid wood painted door will eventually develop small hairline
cracks along the joints where the pieces meet. HDF does not expand or contract,
meaning your painted finish stays smooth, crisp, and crack-free for years.
Finally, you must look at how these materials are put together. High-quality semi-custom
cabinets will feature solid wood drawer boxes with dovetail joinery. Dovetail joints
use interlocking wooden teeth that mechanically lock the drawer sides together,
ensuring the drawer front will never pull off, no matter how heavy your pots and pans
are. When you combine all-plywood boxes, HDF center panels for painted doors, and
solid wood dovetailed drawers, you are investing in a kitchen that is engineered to last a
lifetime.
